Glass greenhouses
Glass greenhouses have been around a long time. Nineteenth
century greenhouses are still considered some of the great styles in
greenhouse architecture. Glass is key in the style, construction and
workings of glass greenhouses.
The glass used in greenhouses is very specific. It is a selective transmission
medium through which energy is trapped in the greenhouse. The air is
warmed close to the ground and the glass roof prevents that warm air
from escaping, thus creating an environment for plants to grow, despite
the cold outside of the greenhouse.
Glass greenhouses are used by commercial growing operations, such as
nurseries for flowers, fruits and vegetables. Tobacco is also grown
extensively in glass greenhouses. Many gardens grow their flowers first,
starting the seeds in greenhouses before moving them to conspicuous
places outside once the weather warms up.
